Remains
These are not images of erasure in progress. They are what has survived it. Natural forms that have outlasted the forces working against them, existing at the edge of disappearance. Some found in winter daylight, others revealed only by a handheld light moving through deep night. The condition differs. The persistence is the same.
Elsewhere The storm has passed. The island has not.
Chorus A winter bog seen from above. The shadows have almost overtaken the trees that cast them.
Late A single grass stem, seed heads intact, still standing in winter. Not finished. Not gone.
Collapse A clump of marsh grass pushes through the snow, its stems splaying outward under the weight of winter. Most are still reaching.
Remains A bare tree stands at the crest of a snow-covered field in northern Wisconsin. Beside it, a hand pump marks where a life was once lived.
Unheld A single rock in silked water. The expanse has no edge
